Asbestos kills. The diseases caused by asbestos exposure are those that are not known to be easily curable, hence it is always advised to remove asbestos safely if you have it in your surroundings. Asbestos abatement is a must to stay safe from asbestos exposure.

If you believe that you have found asbestos in your office or in your home, leave it alone. Asbestos is fatal when the asbestos fibers are airborne, and this occurs only when the asbestos product is disturbed. In most cases  asbestos materials in your house is no cause for alarm if the material is isolated and not disturbed. If the material shows no damage, it can often be left as it is.

In short, if materials containing asbestos are in your home and are in good condition, the safest option is to leave them as they are and try to maintain a distance from them.

But leaving them alone is not similar to forgetting their existance. From time to time the asbestos product should be checked for damage.

If you are thinking about working with or removing a material that contains asbestos, please keep in mind that it is extremely tedious to do it yourself. If you have a licensed asbestos removalist nearby, it is best to consult them.

It is always recommended that loosely-bound asbestos only be removed by a licensed professional removalist, as dangers associated with handling this type of material are far greater than for firmly-bound or covered asbestos.

A householder may legally remove asbestos from their property, however as asbestos poses a health risk during removal, packaging, transport and disposal, it is important that it is handled safely during these operations. But how to do it in a proper way?

How to remove asbestos safely?

Asbestos abatement is done in a number of ways. Asbestos removal experts usually do –

1. Remove it.  Asbestos abatement experts will most efficaciously remove asbestos from a place.  They use advanced protective equipment, and the asbestos product is wetted and removed from its place. The experts then double bag it and dispose dump it in a hazardous waste landfill.  The wetting process is done prior to abatement to prevent contamination of the area when the asbestos is moved to other place.  Wetting keeps the asbestos fibers from getting airborne.

2. Wrap it.  If the asbestos product is in good shape and hasn’t started wear and tear, it can be wrapped in a cement-based tape covering to enclose it in place.  Necessary care must be taken not to disturb the asbestos material anyhow.

3. Cover and seal it.  With tiles and other flooring containing asbestos materials, it is considered best just to cover it with any other flooring material as a sealant which will prevent it from being broken or crushed thus keeping the risk of the hazardous asbestos fibers which could become airborne.
